Description

Joe never divorced his legal wife, making my siblings and me bastards, and our mother a fool. Mama always said our bigamist daddy was crazy. Growing up with an unpredictable father wasn’t easy. My family was dysfunctional because of him. Daddy sometimes vanished for weeks at a time. Even though Mama was sick and couldn’t work, Joe abandoned us for good when I was eleven, like he did his other wife and four kids. We were a lot like the Shameless television series where the children are forced to support the family or else go hungry, even before our alcoholic father ran away. Daddy was a bigamist, and my parent’s marriage was a misdemeanor–but the only crime Joe ever committed was leaving me. Carpenter Joe Vasquez always wanted to build his wife and kids a house in Albuquerque with his very own hands, but sometimes a man has a dream that can rip a family apart. The heart-warming, heart twisting, A HOUSE OF STICKS.

Reviews/Quotes

Mommy regrets only two things in her life- her missing eyebrows and ever marrying Daddy. I never danced with my father, but I danced in his shed with his sawdust swirling around my bone-thin ankles. Once a week, a garbage truck barrels down our street, hitting potholes and farting garbage. The summer before I turned eight, I read Tom Sawyer ten times and fell madly in love with novels. What a revelation that anyone can write by painting images in people's heads. REVIEWS: Two Thumbs Up! This author has the ability to weave words into a wonderful and intriguing story! She has an uncanny way of capturing the reader and making them feel as if they are that "fly on the wall," watching everything unfold! Great Read! The Author did a great job telling the story from the point of view of a little girl, it's as if you were there, watching her from a distance. The characters are interesting, and the story transports you to the 50's/early 60's with what seems like remarkable authenticity and detailed accuracy. I definitely want to see how the story ends and can't wait for the next installment! A memoir that readers will NOT soon forget. Engrossing and Fascinating. The only complaint I have regarding A HOUSE OF STICKS is that it was over too soon. I rate A HOUSE OF STICKS as 5 out of 5 Stars and I believe that anyone and everyone will enjoy this fascinating memoir that will grab you by the heartstrings and firmly take hold. Like walking in the shoes of childhood all over again. As Belinda inhales what remains of her father (the Pinocchio man) I am hungry to know what happened after he left. It will be continued in “After Daddy Left Us” and I can’t wait! Fantastic!
