Description

Anchorage is among the most diverse cities in the United States. Children speaking more than one hundred different languages call it their home. Under its sky, they dream at night and tell stories during the day. These children’s origins are so far-flung that a world atlas of dreams and stories could be built from their testimony. Eyes Closed is such an atlas. It comprises the dreams of 19 children from different ethnic and religious communities. Eyes Closed is a celebration of heritage, hope, and imagination.

Reviews/Quotes

Former Alaska Governor William Walker said of one of the Eyes Closed stories, “I read Kayleece’s panel, where she talks about growing up and respecting the elders. What a great story! What a great message that is! […] It is very, very heartfelt, and she’s only eleven years old.” Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz said, “What this project symbolizes to me is that from the many different stories that make up our great city, we are weaving together one Anchorage.” Dr. E.J.R. David Ramos, UAA Associate Professor of Psychology and father of two children interviewed in the project, said, “This project is about empowering children, and when our children are empowered, when our youth are empowered, then our city is powerful. When our youth believe that they matter, then our city will be formidable. When our youth are allowed to dream and when we help our young people achieve their dreams, then our city will be strong.” REVIEWS: Eyes Closed in Alaska Public Media: https://www.alaskapublic.org/2018/10/17/eyes-closed-when-you-are-10-and-you-have-dreams/ Eyes Closed in Forum Magazine: https://issuu.com/alaskahumanitiesforum/docs/forum_winter18/25
